Phil Gets Roasted on Pagan-Musings

Today on Pagan-Musings, KaliSara instigated a Roast of RevKess (aka Phil, the author of this blog). Wikipedia defines a roast thus:
A roast is an event in which an individual is subjected to a public presentation of comedic insults, praise, outlandish true and untrue stories, and heartwarming tributes, the implication being that the roastee is able to take the jokes in good humor and not as serious criticism or insult, and therefore, show their good nature. It is seen by some as a great honor to be roasted, as the individual is surrounded by friends, fans, and well-wishers, who can receive some of the same treatment as well during the course of the evening. The party and presentation itself are both referred to as a roast. The host of the event is called the roastmaster. Anyone who is honored in such a way is said to have been "roasted".
And Sarah did play the role of roastmaster very well. With callers and comments in the chat rooms, we had a wonderful today during the show. Sarah told how she and I first met, via ISCABBS and we talked about some of experiences at ISCAnics in Iowa City, IA. Those were certainly fun and interesting. Some of the stories were editted to protect the not-so-innocent as well as to protect ourselves.

Listener and friend ChrisInSA called in to talk about some of our adventures when she lived in Lincoln. We met over a D&D gaming session and things went down hill from there. We LARPed, did Karaoke and even performed in a Drag Production at the Q in Lincoln. The Daily Nebraskan did a story on that show and they talk about Sarah in the article.

Sarah's partner and father ofher daughter, Stormcrow, called in to say that he thinks of me as the most "epicly straight gay man" he has ever met. He also related the story of calling me one night when I was late coming home from work. Stormie and I used to room together and we both worked for the same company, just different facilities. My first night on the job I wound up working twelve hours, which was much longer than he thought I would be there. So he called me wondering where I was. I was driving home when he called. Just as I answered the phone I saw police lights in my rearview mirror. The officer pulled me over because he thought I was drunk, I had apparently swerved over into his lane as I answered the phone. Lucky for me he took me at my word that I was just very tired and he let me go with a verbal warning.

And of course we had to talk about the Pagan Alliance Network and some of the incidents involved there. At the discussion group we had a member who was rather young and not educated in the U.S., so some of the terms we were using were unfamiliar to him. These terms were not necessarily Pagan specific. We found that it was easier to hand him a dictionary as soon ashe entered the room. Saved him the time of being lost and confused while waiting for the chance to ask what something meant.

There was also the Samhain that we did hand dipped candles and carved pumpkins in preparation for the ritual. We had a blast making the candles and carving the pumpkins. I even roasted the seeds as part of the ritual feast.

We talked about all of this and much more. You can listen to the archived podcast at www.blogtalkradio.com/pagan-musings.

We also plotted some of the future shows. Coming up on the 18th is Witch in the Kitchen, a discussion of Kitchen Witchery. On the 25th we are going to discuss Pagan Expos & Metaphysical Events, past, present, and future that we have been involved with. On October 2nd we will be in Omaha for Mystic Fest 2010 and will be airing a repeat of one of our earlier shows. But we will be back on the 9th with part three of Sacred Sexuality, LBGT+ Pagans and sacred sexuality.

And of course we had some pre-Mysitc Fest chatter. Sarah and I have been working on make improvements to the store's website, www.pangaiastore.com. We have also made some adjustments to our store logo and will be preparing to feature many unique and wonderful items at Mystic Fest. Check out the September 14th posting at www.pangaiastore.com/blog for more details on Mystic Fest and what we are going to have available for our patrons.

Murphy's Magic Mess w/ Guest Dale Bacon

Greetings, friends!

It was another fun filled show! With special guest Dale Bacon and some surprises. Dale used to host a program on KZUM several years ago. Our long time listeners may remember Mystic's Dream, a new age music program that was on right before Murphy's Magic Mess. Dale also plays tour guide for the annual Ghosts of Lincoln Tour, which he has been doing for a number of years.

The Set List:
  1. Wytches Chant '98 - Inkubus Sukkubs- Away with the Faeiries
  2. A Still Motion - Michael Samson - A Still Motion
  3. Over Such Beauty - Matthew Labarge - October
  4. Die & Be Reborn - Abigail Spinner McBride - Fire of Creation
  5. Persephone - Bruce Mitchell - New Earth Goddess
  6. The Wild Hunt - Omnia - Crone of War
  7. Hail, Crone - Pauline LaBelle - Dancing with the Crone
  8. This is Halloween - Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack
  9. On Ghost Eve - Caroline Hillyer
  10. Dark Goddess - Crow Women - Crow Goddess
  11. The Only Son - Michael Longcor
  12. Don't Call My Name in B attle - Heather Alexander
  13. Matters of Life & Death - Gail Perrigo - Never Again the Burning Times
  14. Kayler's Rage - Heather Alexander
  15. Lord Idath (Idath's Ride) - Leigh Anne Hussey - Homebrew
  16. Dark Lord - Tamara James & Jennifer Holding - Libation
  17. What's Wild is Wild - Gary Moore - What's Wild is Wild (story)
  18. Dead Gerbil Jam - Kenny Klein - Fairy Queen
  19. Anti-Dead Gerbil Song - Dale Bacon (radio debut)
  20. Morrighan - Damb the Bard
  21. Wake Skadi - Hagalaz
Like many of our listeners, you either love or you hate Kenny Klein's Dead Gerbil Jam. Dale Bacon hates it and he wrote and recorded his thoughts on the song. We played that for the first time ever on the Mess, Anti-Gerbil Song is a funny take on how some people react to the song. It would appear that Murf will be using that as a bait during future pledge drives. :)

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT DALE BACON:
Dale Bacon is a long time fixture of the Lincoln Pagan Community. A druid and story teller, most everyone Lincoln seems to know who he is. Either long time listeners of KZUM, local history buffs, or even just your casual about town person, Dale is a popular guy. He's been dabbling in filmography for years and has recently begun releasing a series of DVDs. Song of Amergin was the first release and is available at Pangaia Metaphysical Store. His latest release, A Haunted History of Lincoln - the Capitol City, was released on October 6th and is available through Pangaia as well as Here & Back Again and the Next Millennium. This is the first installment in his series on Supernatural Nebraska. Future releases include a history of witchcraft in Nebraska, which Murf and myself are mentioned in.

Tune into Pagan-Musings this Sunday morning at 12am to hear a segment from Haunted History.

PLEDGE REMINDER:
Just because KZUM is not currently in pledge drive doesn't mean that your listeners can't make pledges. You can visit KZUM on the web and make a pledge through their secure server or you can the radio station (474-5086) at any time to make your pledge. Be sure and mention Murphy's Magic Mess when making your pledge!

Catch next time on the Mess! Missed a show, you can catch recent episodes at our MySpace page: www.myspace.com/Murphysmagickmess.

Pagan-Musings: Ground, Center, Shield, pt 1

Hello and thank you for listening to Pagan-Musings! Even when we have the sound glitches that we did with this episode. Most of the information that we covered can either be found in this blog or by visiting the Pangaia Metaphysical Store's blog. I hope you were able to learn something from our ramblings and musings.

SHOW NOTES:
The topic of this weekend's show was Ground, Center, Shield (pt. 1) Grounding.

Grounding is one of the three basics of metaphysics, the others being centering and shielding. RevKess and KaliSara both feel that these basics are very important to anyone who practices their spirituality in a manner that creates a beacon on the other plains. Grounding is the first of these three basics and is easily done through various means.

Examples of grounding techniques include: The tree meditation as described by RevKess, the burning pot, food, drink, sex, etc. Anything that gets you in touch with the elements. You can ground using earth, the tree meditation or touching the ground after a ritual; using air, letting the wind blow the excess energies away from you; fire, using the burning pot (described below); and water, letting the running water of a spring wash the energies away.

THE BURNING POT EXERCISE
Items suggested/needed:
  • cauldron or other fire safe vessel
  • salt (sea salt, table sdalt, epsom salts)
  • alcohol (rubbing alcohol or grain alcohol)
  • matches or lighter
  • heat resistant plate
Place the cauldron on the heat resistant plate. Pour equal parts salt and alcohol into the cauldron. Light the alcohol on fire. Sit back in a comfortable position and let your negative energies, stresses, etc flow into the flame and be consumed/transformed by the fire.

This is a wonderful starting point to a meditation, it helps to clear your mind and body of the influences that may distract you during meditation. This can also be used prior to ritual or spell work to help ground and center yourself.

The Swifting Ritual

Dorothy Morrison, Utterly Wicked, pp. 102-104

Materials:

  • 1 black candle

  • 1 brown (yellow, gray or lavender) candle

  • 1 white candle

  • table salt

  • metal cookie sheet

  • paper and pen

  • a large supply of “negative” energy

Place the cookie sheet horizontally on a flat surface. Beginning at the center left-hand side of the cookie sheet, arrange the candles – first black, then brown, then white – so they form a horizontal line. Then using the salt, draw a horizontal line from the white candle to a point approximately three quarters of the way to the right-hand edge of the pan. Draw an arrow tip with the salt at the end of the line, then draw a salt circle around the arrow tip to encase it.

Write your desire on the paper in large block letters. [….] But since we're breaking a curse here, simply write “GOOD FORTUNE.” Fold the paper into thirds, then into thirds again, and place it inside the salt circle directly on top of the arrow tip.

Ground and center. Light the black candle and focus on all the nasty energy coming your way. See the harm it;s done, the trouble it's caused, and feel your personal misery. Then take it a step further and feel the anger. Don't just become angry though. Let the fury consume you until you're absolutely, positively, livid pissed. [….] Then name the candle for negativity.

Light the brown candle. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly, releasing every particle of anger from your body. When detachment takes over – and it will – feel the weight of your personal burden lighten. Then see the energy begin to transform into something neutral, and name the candle for transformation.

Light the white candle. See the energy transformation process as complete. There is nothing left but clear, bright, raw, pure energy now. Energy which you can use to manifest your desire. Name the candle for raw, untapped, pure energy.

With your eyes closed, follow the salt line from the candle to the circle, and focus on the paper with your intention. Visualization is very important here, for you not only need to see your desires coming to fruition – your luck changing, your life becoming yours again, living a life you want t olive – but be able to feel them as if they've already manifested.

[….]

When the candles extinguish themselves out, light the paper, and leave it in the salt circle until it burns to ash. [….] Once the ashes are cool, gather them together with the salt and the remnants of wicks and wax (if there are any), and bury the items outdoors. [….]

[T]hings begin to change immediately. [….]. All that's left is for you to decide precisely how you want to live that life you've taken back. And I've no doubt you can manage that!

This is My Athame, Pagan-Musings for Saturday, August 15, 2009

Hey, there, all our loyal and new listeners! RevKess and KaliSara put on a somewhat disjointed, yet entertaining and educational show for "This is my athame....". The topic was pertaining to ritual tools, their uses, a bit of history, and alternatives for when you do not have your tools handy.

We had a wonderful discussion of basic altar and ritual tools. We touched upon portable altars and some of their uses, in particular what author Raven Grimassi has written about the Strega version of this:

The Nanta Bag

The Nanta Bag is a very old tool, appearingin various forms as it is traced back through the Ages. The form in which we have it today comes to us from fifteenth-century Italy. The purpose of the Nanta Bag is twofold. First, it is designed to keep its wearer in harmony with the forces of Nature. Second, it serves as a carrier for the tools of the Art, so that a witch can perform his or her Magick anywhere or any time. The original followers of Aradia carried them as they traveled from village to village, and soon they became a symbol of being a Priest or Priestess of the Old Religion.

[…..]

The principle of “contagion” Magick was the foundation for empowering the bag. Basically, this means that objects absorb power and have an energy field around them. When one object is placed in contact with another, then these objects are joined and influence one another. The Nanta Bag, in turn, has a contagion influence upon the person who carries it (in direct proportion to the items it contains).

[…..]

A small stone, smooth and rounded

A small feather, blue or very light in color

A small portion of ash (wood or coal)

A small vessel of pure water

A small coin, with a five pointed star etched upon it

A small twig (fruit or nutwood)

A pin with a black head (or needle)

A thimble

A portion of incense

2 small candles

A piece of marking chalk

A measure of cord (nine feet)

A small finger-sized bowl (cup or dish)

A symbol of the God (an acorn, small pine cone, piece of horn, etc)

A symbol of the Goddess (a seashell, string of beads, nutshell, etc)

A personal power object (a lucky piece, a crystal, etc)

A portion of salt

A small vessel of anointing oil

[Place these items into a bag and say:]

O' Great Nanta bag, be thou a natural focus

and a bridge to Power.

I am linked to thee and thou art linked to Nature.

We are One from Three

We are the Triangle manifest.

In the names of Tana and Tanus, so be it.

(From Ways of the Strega by Raven Grimassi, republished as Hereditary Witchcraft, pp. 86 & 87. Text inside [] by Rev. Philipp J. Kessler, 2009.)

We also had a couple of live callers during the show. Both Besom and Cairelle had some wonderful in put for us! Thank you both. And I do apologize to whomever that third caller was that we lost somewhere along the way.

Pagan-Musings: An Introduction

Pagan-Musings: An Introduction

www.BlogTalkRadio.com

Hosted by RevKess and KaliSara

original air date: Saturday, July 18, 2009, 10:00pm CST at www.blogtalkradio.com/Pagan-Musings

Greetings and well met, our friends and listeners! We had a slow start to our first program, due to technical difficulties. We did manage to pull it off, though! Thank you to Aut and Lostrayne on the East Coast for showing their support in the chat room and listening to Kali and I get our wits about us.

The primary purpose of this first episode was to test the waters and see if we could get most of what we were doing figured out. I think we did manage to do so, but only time will tell. Our next episode will hopefully have less technical errors in programming and more success with our conversational continuity.

I would like to apologize for the dead air time towards the end of the show, it would seem that I somehow lost my connection with Skype for a minute and didn't realize until after I had been babbling for a minute or two without anyone able to hear me. I hope to be able to catch that before it happens again. But, for a first time out, I think it was rather successful! KaliSara was such a trooper in putting up with me while I was learning the ropes.

One last note, a correction actually, before going on to specifics about this episode and future shows. I did not have a calendar in front of me so I misspoke about the upcoming show This is My Athame. It is scheduled for Saturday, August 15th, I had said the 10th, which is a Tuesday. A little hard to do a Saturday show on Tuesday. My apologies for any confusion.

Topics discussed in our Introduction:

  • The Summoning by Nuit on the album Mother Night – http://www.motogrrl.org

Future Shows:

  1. Saturday, July 25, 2009, 10pm CST: Pagan Alliance Network, history, what it is today, and what it offers.

  2. Saturday August 1, 2009, 10pm CST: The Quantum Pagan, how science has proven magic exists and how to use quantum mechanics in every day life.

  3. Saturday, August 8, 2009, 10pm CST: The Techno Pagan, use of technology and the internet to reach out to the Pagan community.

  4. Saturday, August 15, 2009, 10pm CST: This is My Athame, ritual tools, their uses, and what to use in a pinch.

Greetings, once again! Thank you for listening to Murphyy's Magic Mess on KZUM 89.3FM in Lincoln, NE or on the web at www.kzum.org, and Lincoln Time Warner Cable channel 10.

I am going to show the two main looks of Damon, the Pocket Pirate a.k.a. Sir Fluff. the first picture is Damon looking all cool at the microphone with his dark glasses and slicked hair. The second one is Sleepy Damon from a couple of weeks ago. Poor man came in tired off his feet, bedraggled and barely dressed - that is, he was dressed by not as dressed as Damon usually. Too bad I didn't get a picture of him in his kilt from last week! Will have to see if we can catch him in that again. Ooolahlah!

Unfortunately, I do have to be a good boy and avoid posting any pictures that could be compromising to Damon or the radio station. But that doesn't mean I can't take them! /evil grin/

As promised: Murphy's Magick Mess is now available online to listen to any time of day or night! Sometime today the new site will be totally up and running. Damon has worked out a way to put the show on MySpace.com, you do not need to have a MySpace account to access the show. We will have a brief instruction list for how to access the show for those who are not familiar with MySpace. Due to FCC regulation regarding music programs, we are only able to have the show on the site for two weeks at a time, so if you missed a program, be sure to check for it within two weeks of that date. It is being broadcast on MySpace as a video file, which means it will not be downloadable nor will you be able to put certain songs on repeat. But we will have playlists for the shows, going all the way back to the mid 1990's, when Murf took over from Cindy Clarity's Spiral Dance. There will also be a link to this blog and other related information. I am still working out some details with Damon and Murf, but we might have some rather interesting things going on with the MySpace site. So keep checking it weekly for updates other than just the show.

Announcements, announcements, announcements!

July 5, 2009

Greetings and thank you once again for listening to the Mess! We had, as usual, a very good show. Good music, fun conversation, and lots of phone calls this week. Woot!

First, we would like to thank ALL of KZUM's supports, we raised over $13K in our latest pledge drive. That is for ALL shows and ALL programmers. Congratulations to the station!

Second, we would like to thank everyone for making this 4th of July weekend a safe and exciting one! Celebrating our independence is important, but we don't want to be b lowing our fingers off or setting the neighbor's house on fire!

Third, I'd like to send a shout out to all those online listeners that we have! Cairelle in New Orleans, Gwydion and Silverowl in Massachusetts, Lauralee et al in the Denver area, and of course our overseas listeners who are too many to list! These are just a few of our online listeners. You can tap into the live streaming audio by going to the KZUM website and clicking on the microphone icon on the left side of the page. The Mess is on at 9am CST every Sunday, but there are so many other shows to fit your tastes. Explore the site while you are listening to the Mess.

We are always aquiring new music as we go. If you have any suggestions or requests, please feel free to comment here or email Phil.

Some up-and-coming things for the Mess:
At least once a month we plan to have a themed show. We've already been doing something like this for the Sabbats and other special holidays. But what we are planning is something more along the lines of featuring an artist or a style. So if you have any suggestions we would love to hear about them!

Damon is working on creating a MySpace page for the Mess that will have up-to-date playlists and video streams of our shows. Now, these will be track listing videos, not footage from the studio. Though we may through in some pictures of the three of us, our featured artists and guests. We will only be able to have each shop up for two weeks at a time to avoid issues with the FCC and the video will not be downloadable. But you will be able to catch each show for up to weeks. I'll be sure to post the link when it is up and ready!

Murf is moving her website by the end of this fall. Yahoo has decided to do away with the Geocities sites and that is where Murf has had the radio's website for the last several years. Perhaps that explains why she has stopped updating her playlist... Damon and I are helping her to move her archives over to a new site and we shall see what we can do about having special links and other services available. We do know that her playlists will be archived back as far as we can go. I believe as far back as 1996 or so. Again, as soon as we have the live link, I'll post it here for you.

And last, but not least, Phil will be on a podcast soon. Cairelle from WitchyLiving will be interviewing Phil on his involvement with the local and national Pagan communities, the Pagan Alliance Network and other issues and topics of interest. The show is scheduled to air live on Monday, August 3, 2009 at 8pm Central. There is also a chat room open during the podcast for people to talk about the show and whatever else might come to mind. As this is a podcast, it will be archived and available for download if you miss the live broadcast. Phil and Cairelle are both very excited to be doing this together.

May 17, 2009

Greetings and well met, our loyal listeners and fans! Once again we had a chaotic show. But we are the mess. I have to apologize, I was out of sorts this morning. I have an ear infection and cannot hear out of my right ear right now, so I was not really putting much into the show. But Murf and Damon/Sir Fluff/Pocket Viking did take care of that.

As promised, I am attempting to post the play list from each show from now on. Pardon me if it is a little messed up at this point. I had trouble reading Murf's handwriting and with the messed up hearing this morning I may have misheard some of the titles or artists. So here goes:

Wytches Chant by Inkubus Sukkubus
Begin Again from Terri Mason's Om Gaia
Alhambra (the Red)from Lawrence Blatt's The Color of Sunshine
Rhiannon from Or Mabinogi's Ceredwen, Legends of the Celts
Heart of Spring from David Arkenstone's Celtic Book of Days
The Dragon's Breath also from David Arkenstone's Celtic Book of Days
Fire off of Brian Crane's Piano Opus
Road to Fairie from David Akerstone's Celtic Book of Days
Song Bird by Jana Reynolds
Spirit of Tintaginel by Scott Helland and the Gypsy Nomads
Shining Knight in Dented Armour also by Scott Helland and the Gypsy Nomads
Moonlight by Spiral Dance
Pan from the Chorus of Life by Gaia Voice
Das Tor by Pagan Mediaevel Renaissance Folk off their Faun CD
Unorthodoxology by Gaia Voice on their CD The Chorus of Life
Metamorphosis from the Chorus of Life by Gaia Voice
Water Fire & Smoke by Kathy Mar
Elemental Chant by Wendy Rule
Intro: Viator from Corvus Corax's Viator
Skudrinka from Corvus Corax's Viator
Bacchus (lat.) also from Corvus Corax's Viator
Circle Song also by Wendy Rule
Discovery by Three Wyrd Sisters
Gently Johnny by Damb the Bard
....and I know there were at least two others. They got lost as we were cleaning up at the end of the show.

Once again, I would like to thank your online listeners. We are gaining popularity world wide. I know we were already being listened to world wide, but thanks to the internet's chat rooms, we are getting immediate feed back from our listeners. As was evidenced by last week's special dedication to Solace. :)

I have also being getting great recommendations from our online listeners. Since I cannot always play them on air, either due to lack of time or content, I will list them on this blog from time to time. This week I would like to feature my friend Alessandra from PaganSpace.net. She has not yet, to my knowledge, released a CD. Her singles are available at her website and they are definately worth a listen.

Well, all, it was a wonderful show, again. If I may toot my own horn, that is. You see, Murf asked me to help put the show together for Sunday. It was a blast. Hardly even got close to playing half of what I had picked out, but it is May and we have four more shows to go. ;)

The morning started out for me, Sarah was visiting from Cozad and we got up with plenty of time to spare before the show.... or so we thought. It was the Lincoln Marathon. I live right off of 10th Street and the radio station is located on the top floor of the Terminal Building, which is also on 10th. Guess what, the Marathon route went from before my apartment to past the studio. Needless to say, we had fun getting there. Good thing I suggested we leave early. We managed to find a parking space only a block away from the station. Now, Murf, being more experienced, left early enough to take an alternate route to the station and had few problems getting there. She was just arriving at the sound booth as Sarah and I got upstairs. Thank you, Damon, for waiting in the parking lot for us! You are a Goddess send!

Once we arrived and got settled in, Murf started off the show with the back up disk she made just in case I wasn't able to arrive on time. Heh. Good thing, too. She had some wonderful new stuff courtesy of a music promoter, and it was BEAUTIFUL. I have received comments in email from one of my listeners in Colorado. Blessed be, Lauralee!

The Pocket Pirate, a.k.a. Damon, was with us once again. I am so pleased to have him back on the show. He brings an interesting take on things. I sometimes am too serious and he makes us all laugh. Seems I have turned into the Straight Man on the show, and that is just ironic if you know me at all. :) I am good for being the butt of jokes, but I also like to share some good ones.

Sarah's visit to the show was great. She was there for moral support during my first solo-esque stint behind the boards. And that was her voice you heard a lot during the second half of the show. She did our Quotes and helped with the announcements. She is also helping me to find some fun and interesting music to maybe play in the future. One of her suggestions is Enter the Haggis, a Celtic rock group out of Canada. You can find them at www.enterthehaggis.com, where you can listen to streams of all four of their albums thus far and even purchase their music. At some point I am sure you will get to hear some of their music on the show. We are pondering doing themed shows once a month to help share some of the great stuff we have found that doesn't always fit into the normal genre of Pagan music.

Now, on to some of the Calendar of Events type stuff for you all. I know not all of this got covered on the air, but we try our best to share it all with you when we can.
